FHSAA State Championships

At Kissimmee

Mariner stars Camren French (126 pounds) and defending state champion Maximus Brady (132) will go for the gold today in the FHSAA Class 2A championship wrestling matches Saturday afternoon in Kissimmee.

D’angelo Gil (120 pounds), Julian Gonzalez (165) and Seth Tshiams (285) of North Fort Myers will be competing for third-place finishes. Cape Coral grappler Judd Cole also has a shot at third place at 157 pounds.

In Class 1A, Bishop Verot’s Bennett Sweitzer will be seeking a third place at 175 pounds.

Gabriella Sergi of North Fort Myers remains in contention for a third-place finish as the FHSAA tournament wraps up on Saturday. Sergi made it to the semifinals at 125 pounds before suffering her first defeat.

Mariner 20, Cape Coral 17: A slugfest between the two rivals wound up in the Tritons’ favor. Jacob Gorra, Trenton Taylor and PJ Marino had three RBI each. Gorra scored four runs. Cape’s Justin Czerniak had a big night with three hits, two walks, five RBI and three runs scored.

Ida Baker 1, North Fort Myers 0: Cody Catania drove home James Donnelly with the game’s only run in the fifth inning. Keegan Pitstick threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the Bulldogs (3-2), dropping the Red Knights to 1-4.

Island Coast 3, North Port 2: Mason Blackburn’s sacrifice fly brought Isaac Lopez home with the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh inning. Grady Schwiezer and Jayven Torres also had RBI for the Gators (3-2).

SOFTBALL

Aubrey Rogers 12, Oasis 5: Charlee Turner had two hits and two RBI for the Sharks (1-4).

Mariner 12, Cape Coral 0: Gabi Winters tripled, homered and drove in four Tritons runs. Mia Standard had two RBI and two runs scored. Winters and Lorelai Schippel combined on a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts.

North Fort Myers 17, Ida Baker 1 (5 innings): Mia Lane hit for the cycle (single, double, triple, home run), driving in three Red Knights runs and scoring three herself. Liliana Hertzog was 2-four, driving in four runs. Abigail Hynes (3-for-4) and Audrie Florenzano (also 3-for-4) each had three RBI for North (4-0). Meagan Kunkel drove in a run for the Bulldogs (1-3).

Naples 17, Bishop Verot 2: Daphne O’Hara led the Vikings with two goals, 3 ground balls and 3 forced turnovers. Lily Lockard contributed an assist.
