Mariner boys basketball team advances to state final four

Championship
The Mariner Tritons are heading to the FHSAA Class 5A Final Four, disposing of Seminole 73-56 in Friday’s region final.
Kelvin Jiminez and Corey Hunter scored 20 points each for Mariner and Asher Hercek added 15 in Friday’s win at Mariner’s Frank Morris Memorial Gymnasium.
The Tritons (20-9) will take on Miami Norland (19-9) March 6 in Lakeland.
Norland topped Oakland Park Northeastern in the 5A-4 title game.
Mariner is in the Final Four for the first time since the 2016-2017 season, when the Tritons fell to Leesburg in the state championship. The Tritons also reached the Final Four in 1996, when current coach Ryan Hercek was a player.
SOFTBALL
Cape Coral 5, Oasis 2: Emma Brannan, Abigail Brannan and Isabel Watts drove in a run each for the Seahawks (1-0). Mya Ramirez scored twice. Oasis slipped to 0-3.
Bishop Verot 14, Ida Baker 2: Melanie Moreno drove in four Vikings runs, going 3-for-4 with two doubles. Lillie Layne homered and had three RBI, while Crimson Lawrence and McKenna Robbins added two RBI each. The result left Bishop Verot 1-0 and Ida Baker 1-1.
North Fort Myers 13, Immokalee 3 (6 innings): Taylor Stewart, Jordyn Prado, Audrie Florenzano and Lilliana Hertzog drove in two runs each for the Red Knights. Florenzano homered and scored three times. Prado had a triple.
BASEBALL
Lakeland 2, Island Coast 0: Dreadnaughts pitcher Jose Garcia held the Gators (1-1) to one hit to win a pitchers’ duel. Ryan Mueller and two Island Coast relievers limited Lakeland to four hits.
Key West 5, North Fort Myers 0: Aiden Estrada and Jakob Wagner had hits for the Red Knights (0-2).
Oasis 7, Lely 1: Sean Osborn drove in two for the Sharks (1-1). Caiden Dusel tripled home a run, while Tanner Goff and Grayson Medico had an RBI each. Medico allowed just a hit and a walk over five scoreless innings, striking out eight. Goff fanned five in two innings of relief.
