FOOTBALL

FHSAA REGION 2S-4

Semifinal

Bishop Verot 44, Estero 6: Even before halftime, the only question was who would be coming to Bishop Verot (11-1) for next week’s Region 2S-4 title game.

The Vikings already had a 41-0 lead on Estero, setting up the 10th running clock this season for Bishop Verot.

That question took a while to answer. Updates were not exactly flowing from the Sarasota Booker-Lemon Bay semifinal game.

The answer turned out to be that the Vikings would be taking on a hot ‘dog.

Underdog Booker (8-4), having already stunned region second seed Fort Meade in the first round, eliminated No. 3 Lemon Bay 14-0 on Friday.

There was this one other question for Vikings fans: Just how much damage would new University of Michigan quarterback commit Carter Smith do to the Wildcats?

The answer was: Plenty.

Before halftime, on his touchdown passes to Matt Turner alone, Smith had thrown for 210 yards. He had set a new Lee County career scoring plays record (114), and blown past 7,000 passing yards in 2 1/2 seasons.

Smith’s total of 114 touchdown plays (73 passes, 41 runs) moved him past former South Fort Myers star Dallas Crawford.

As for Turner, four touchdown receptions — including a 99-yarder — and a total of 238 yards on seven catches was a good month’s work for a lot of high school receivers.

It wasn’t all Smith and Turner. Ryan Gadson returned a punt 80 yards for a TD, and Macrae Thompson ran in from 4 yards out. Thomas Lilly added a 22-yard Vikings field goal at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth-seeded Wildcats ended 9-3, with two of their three losses to Bishop Verot.

CROSS COUNTRY

FHSAA State Championships

Bishop Verot’s Mackenzie De Lisle finished second Friday in the Class 2A girls cross country state championship meet in Tallahassee.

De Lisle’s time was 17:52.2. She paced the Vikings to a fourth-place finish in the team standings. Verot’s top five runners all finished in the top 100.

Jazlyn Forbes of Oasis also had a strong performance at Apalachee Regional Park, crossing the line sixth in a time of 18:38.4. She made the state meet as an individual runner.

Bishop Verot’s boys also came in fourth, paced by Andrew Marino (11th in 16:21.7). All five Vikings runners scoring points for their team were in the top 58.

Truman Wiedner of Oasis, an individual competitor, was 155th in a field of 240 runners.

In Class 3A girls, Cape Coral finished 22nd of 32 teams, with North Fort Myers 29th. The Red Knights’ Alexis Neumann was the top local finisher, crossing the line in 21:08.1, 85th overall.

Naples was 10th in the girls team results.

The Cape Coral boys were 13th in the team standings. Individually, the best local finisher was Angel Cruz of Mariner, an individual runner coming in 51st in 16:58.7.

Three other Southwest Florida boys teams finished in the top 10. Naples was second, Fort Myers sixth and Gulf Coast 10th.

Joseph Koraya of Fort Myers came in seventh overall with a time of 15:51.1.
