Mariner falls in football playoff opener

Golden Gate 48, Mariner 14: It was a short run for the Tritons (8-3) in the Region 3S-4 playoffs, as region top seed Golden Gate rolled to victory in a first-round game. Kaelen Davidson ran a kickoff back for a Mariner touchdown, and Tammer Every connected with Justin Lewis on both a TD pass and two-point conversion. Golden Gate will be home against Dunbar in the Region 3S-4 semifinals.

Verot’s foe: Bishop Verot will be home against Estero in next week’s Region 2S-4 semifinals. The Wildcats (9-2) downed Hardee 26-6 on Friday, one night after Bishop Verot (10-1), the top seed in the region, routed Mulberry 47-6. Estero and Bishop Verot met in a regular-season game October 27, with the Vikings winning 52-0 to clinch the District 2S-16 title. Also in 2S-4 on Friday, Sarasota Booker stunned previously unbeaten and second-seeded Fort Meade 33-17. Booker will take on No. 3 seed Lemon Bay, a 39-7 victor over Frostproof, in the other semifinal.

North Port 3, Mariner 2: Maximo Gorosito scored and had an assist for the Tritons (0-1), and Justin Medero also scored.
