BOYS WRESTLING

Lee County Athletic Conference Championships

At Riverdale High school

North Fort Myers, Mariner and Cape Coral finished 2-3-4 in the Lee County wrestling tournament on Saturday at Riverdale.

The host Raiders were the top team in the event.

North’s strong finish was due to the team’s depth. Frank Cornelison (220 pounds) was the only weight class winner for the Red Knights, but eight other North wrestlers were top-four finishers.

Mariner, as usual, was led by two-time state champion Christian Minto (160) and defending state titleist Maximus Brady (126). Six other Tritons were in the top four of their weight classes.

GIRLS SOCCER

Defending state champion Mariner will begin defense of its crown at home Tuesday against St. Petersburg. The Tritons are the top seed in Region 5A-3.

Despite its victory against the Tritons in the District 5A-11 final, North Fort Myers is seeded second in Region 5A-3.

The Red Knights have a Tuesday home first-round match against Braden River.

North and Mariner are on opposite sides of the bracket, which leaves open the possibility of a rematch in the regional championship with a spot in the state semifinals on the line.

BOYS SOCCER

Mariner is returning to the Class 5A state soccer playoffs on Wednesday, opening as the fifth seed in Region 5A-3. First up is a match against Osceola.

The Tritons are the only Lee County team to make the 5A-3 field.

In Region 3A-2, Bishop Verot is the fifth seed and will open the playoffs at Windermere. Oasis made it into the field, but as the eighth seed must open at No. 1 Tampa Prep.

The winners of those two matches will meet in the regional semifinals.

While both Mariner and Bishop Verot won their district tournaments, the FHSAA did not award either a home first-round match.
