Mighty Mussels drop third straight

FORT MYERS – The Mighty Mussels pitching lowered their season ERA below 2.90 Thursday, but ultimately dropped a 2-1 decision to the Dunedin Blue Jays at Hammond Stadium.

Marco Raya started the game, going three scoreless innings while striking out four and not allowing a hit. The 19-year-old averaged 95.8 mph on his fastball. Regi Grace Jr. then came in and worked around four singles, striking out a season-high six Blue Jays (32-40, 4-2) over three innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Fort Myers (42-26, 1-3) struck first as Keoni Cavaco smashed a home run to the berm in left field to give the Mussels a 1-0 lead.

With Fort Myers leading 1-0 in the top of the eighth, Dunedin’s Jose Ferrer reached on a fielding error before Jose Rivas walked against Niklas Rimmel (2-1). After a fielder’s choice and a pop out, Rimmel was taken out of the game. Rainer Nunez then singled to center to make it 1-1. Luis Baez’ throw to third skipped into the Mussels’ dugout, allowing a second run to come in and give Dunedin the lead.

The Mighty Mussels look to bounce back today as LHP Jaylen Nowlin (3-1, 3.48) takes the mound. Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. EDT on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network.
