FORT MYERS – The Mighty Mussels scored three runs in the later innings Wednesday afternoon but came up one short against the Dunedin Blue Jays at Hammond Stadium.

Fort Myers (42-26, 1-3) trailed 5-1 entering the bottom of the fifth. Kala’i Rosario led off the inning by clobbering a long home run down the left field line to make it 5-2. With two outs, Carlos Aguiar pulled a double down the right field line. After a walk, Rubel Cespedes plated Aguiar with an infield single to make it 5-3.

Still trailing by that margin in the eighth, Keoni Cavaco singled to start the inning. The next batter was Zach Huffins, who grounded a base hit up the middle to advance Cavaco to third. Cavaco then scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-4. However, the next three Mussels hitters struck out to cap the scoring.

Mighty Mussels right-hander Pierson Ohl (3-4) spun a quality start, allowing three runs on seven hits over six innings. He fanned four and didn’t walk anyone. Wednesday marked Ohl’s second consecutive outing of six innings, a career high.

The Blue Jays managed to score in three different innings, stringing hits together against Ohl and Mussels reliever Jackson Hicks. Anthony Escobar did a great job keeping Fort Myers in the game, tossing two scoreless frames in relief.

Fort Myers will look to get in the win column at 7 p.m. Thursday. Marco Raya (3-1, 3.00) will pitch for the Mussels, opposed by Jonatan Bernal 1-5, 6.45) of the Blue Jays. Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network.
