Roberto’s two-run home run in 10th lifts Mussels

By Staff | Jun 24, 2022

Nelson Roberto’s two-run, two-out home run in the top of the 10th inning propelled the Mighty Mussels to a 6-4 victory over the Flying Tigers Thursday night at Lakeland’s Joker Marchant Stadium.

The home run was Roberto’s second on the season.

The Mussels (41-23) took the early lead in the game with single runs in the first and third. After the Flying Tigers responded with a run in the fourth, the Mussels added two in the eighth to take a 4-1 lead.

The Flying Tigers didn’t back down, however, plating three runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score at 4-4 and set the table for Roberto’s heroics.

In addition to Roberto, helping lead the Mighty Mussels’ 11-hit attack were Noah Miller, Noah Cardenas, Rubel Cespedes and LaRon Smith with two hits each; both of Smith’s connections were doubles.

Picking up the pitching win in relief was Malik Barrington, his second in three decisions. He tossed three-hit ball over 2.1 innings. Hard-luck starter Pierson Ohl pitched well, allowing just one run and three hits over the first six innings. He also struck out eight while walking only one.

Reliever Jack Anderson suffered the loss for the Flying Tigers (32-34). He’s now 2-3 on the season.

The two teams return to action this evening at 6:30 at Joker Marchant Stadium. The remaining games in the series will be Saturday evening and Sunday.
