Special tribute – Hamman, county honor Dunbar High track & field coach Guy Thomas

By Staff | Aug 3, 2021

Lee County Commissioner Brian Hamman presented a resolution Tuesday recognizing Aug. 3, 2021, as Guy Thomas Day in Lee County. The Southwest Florida Track and field community suffered a tragic loss with the recent passing of Thomas due to complications from COVID-19.

Thomas created a premiere track and field program in Lee County, worked with world class sprinters like Noah Lyles and was recognized as one of the most respected track and field coaches.

The Board of Lee County Commissioners chose to proclaim Aug. 3 as Guy Thomas Day to commemorate his life and to recognize the incredibly positive impact he had on our community.

“Guy Thomas made an unforgettable impact on his community. The Dunbar High School Track and Field coach helped his athletes become world class runners, but more than that, he mentored them with wisdom that they will carry for the rest of their lives,” said Hamman. “It was my privilege to read the resolution into the record at the beginning of today’s commission meeting.”

Dunbar High School Principle Carl Burnside and the Thomas family were in attendance to accept the proclamation and say a few words about Thomas and his effect on his students and our community.
