Volleyball

Oasis 3, Bonita Springs 1: The Sharks (2-3) overall evened their record a 1-1 in District 3A-8. Ashley Quebe had 5 kills and 2 aces, Alysa Wusterbarth 4 digs, 5 kills and 4 digs, Emily Sansone 3 assists and 4 aces, Madelyn Whitacre 6 kills, 3 assists and 4 aces, and Jamie Walls 4 digs and 5 aces.  Oasis is home against South Fort Myers on Tuesday.

Bishop Verot 3, SFCA 1: Verot held off previously unbeaten Southwest Florida Christian rally, 25-12, 25-22, 22-25, 28-26, dropping SFCA to 4-1. The Vikings improved to 2-2.  

Saturday

Cross country

Triton Invitational: Traditional powerhouse Estero won both the girls and boys team titles, with the Wildcats’ Alex Bagby coming in 16 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher in 16:44.13 over the 5-kilometer course. Lemon Bay’s Katelyn Ziamicki was the girls’ medalist in 21:13.62.

Ida Baker had a strong performance, finishing third in the girls’ team competition and fourth in the boys’ field. Melissa Winckler was the first Bulldogs girl across the line, coming home 10th in 22:03.47. For the Baker boys, Ryan Kenney was eighth in 18:18.60 and Declan Ziomek ninth in 18:20.79.

Cape Coral’s girls were fifth and North Fort Myers came in seventh. North had the top local girls finisher, Evie McCarthy, eighth in 21:59.07.

The Oasis girls had two top-25 finishers.  However, like Mariner and Island Coast, the Sharks did not have a full team..

On the boys’ side, host Mariner was 10th, Cape Coral 11th, Oasis 14th and North Fort Myers 16th. Island Coast did not have enough competitors to post a team score.

Cape’s Xathan Piazza just missed out on a top-10 finish, crossing the line 11th with a time of 18:25.36.

Football

North Fort Myers 35, Fort Myers 17: The Red Knights dominated the second half to knock off old archrival Fort Myers in the season opener. Leading 15-10 at intermission, North pulled away with a 18-7 final two periods. Tavin Ward ran for touchdowns of 19 and 10 yards, and threw TD passes of 5 yards to Brett Reed and 11 yards to Conner Leyden. The Red Knights’ defense and special teams each scored with a safety. Reed also kicked a 37-yard field goal.

Bishop Verot 21, Lakeland Christian 20: Ty Whiteman blocked a field goal attempt on the game’s final play to preserve the Vikings’ victory. Lakeland Christian took a 20-14 lead with 11:38 to play, but the Vikings responded with Andrew Kelton’s 14-yard run with 5:45 to play. Deaglan Camron’s extra point proved to be the margin of victory. Jaelin Willis scored on a 3-yard run on Bishop Verot’s first possession, with Malik Curtis running for a two-point conversion. Quarterback Jake Azizi ran for an 8-yard touchdown in the third quarter to give the Vikings (2-1) a 14-12 lead.

Lemon Bay 49, Oasis 7: Toby Kellner connected with Kai Shelton on a 77-yard touchdown pass for the Sharks (1-2).

Lehigh 47, Island Coast 7: Jason Joseph scored on a 40-yard pass play from Gabe Fisher for the Gators’ touchdown in Island Coast’s season opener.

Thursday

Football

Cypress Lake 50, Cape Coral 0: It was a rough debut for the Seahawks, starting with the opening kickoff. Trevantay Watts ran that back 75 yards for Cypress Lake. The Panthers’ JD Sherrod ran for one score and passed for two more, one to Kyrie Savoy and the other to Brendon Anderson.  Anderson also had a rushing TD. Michael Lennett had two 12-yard runs, and Cypress Lake recovered a bad punt snap in the end zone for a safety.
