Frederick W. Carlson

Frederick W. Carlson, 89, a Cape Coral, Fla. resident since 1988, formerly of Lansing, MI, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2013 in Cape Coral. He was born March 9, 1924 in San Diego, CA to Frederick and Adeline Carlson, now deceased.

Fred was a veteran of the US Marine Corp. where he served as a sergeant radio gunner with the VMB 423, the Seahorse Marine division during WWII. He was also a graduate from Michigan State University. Fred was awarded military honors including two Distinguished Flying Cross medals and an Air Medal for “meritorious achievement in aerial flight” as a crew member onboard a naval PBJ aircraft fighting in the South Pacific against Japan. While he was a reluctant hero that seldom spoke of his service, his family and nation will pay tribute to his wartime military service during his memorial service.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Janet M. Carlson of Cape Coral; four loving daughters, Cara Beth Carr and husband Jake of Lansing, MI, Tari Lynn Carlson and husband Neil Santaniello of Delray Beach, FL, Toni Elizabeth Anderson and husband Brad of Oak Park, CA and Anna Marie Soler and husband John of Fontana, CA; two sisters, Mary Place and husband Robert of Okemos, MI and Betty Nasmith of Sun City, Arizona; as well as six grandchildren, Staci, Nikki, Zack, Kelsey, Cassie and Marlee; and two great grandchildren, Jayce and Skyla.

Fred was preceded in death by a beloved son, Kelly (K.C.) Carlson; a grandson, Cory Carr; a sister, Sue Jarrad; and a brother, John Carlson.

Memorial services with Marine Corps. Honors will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 28, at Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota, FL.
