A North Fort Myers man is in custody after allegedly fleeing from Cape Coral police Wednesday morning, hitting six cars in a chase that ultimately saw him arrested.

Sean McGrath, 21, was arrested and charged with one count of fleeing and eluding, one count of reckless driving, six counts of leaving a scene of an accident while failing to provide information, one count of failure to stop at a cash resulting in injuries, and one count of resisting arrest without violence.

Cape Coral Police Department officials state that while the agency was conducing a high visibility traffic enforcement in the area of Skyline Boulevard and Veterans Memorial Parkway, McGrath was traveling 55 mph in a 35 mph zone. Police say McGrath failed to pull over after lights and sirens were engaged by an officer, and he continued driving and collided with two cars, failing to stop and fleeing.

“The Officer lost sight of the vehicle and stopped at the hit-and-run accident to check for possible injuries with the affected cars,” CCPD officials stated in a release. “The Officer started tending to possible injuries in a vehicle with deployed airbags and the driver still inside.”

Police say McGrath hit six vehicles total before exiting his white Ford Fusion and heading into surrounding fields. Another officer that witnessed one of the accidents ran after McGrath, and was helped by a UPS delivery driver who also saw the incident. Police say McGrath ultimately obeyed commands to stop and was quickly detained.

“McGrath stated he saw the initial Officer turn on his lights and try to stop him,” CCPD officials stated. “McGrath said he did not stop because he did not have a driver’s license. FCIC/NCIC records showed that McGrath has a valid license out of Illinois.”

As of Thursday afternoon, McGrath was still in custody at Lee County Jail, with a bond set at a total of $100,000.
