LeeTran celebrates 50 years of public transportation in the Lee County, marks Try Transit Day with free rides

By Staff | Apr 18, 2024

LeeTran is celebrating 50 years of providing reliable and accessible public transportation in Lee County, and everyone is invited to ride fixed routes for free this Saturday, April 20.

The free day of rides will only be on fixed-route buses in Lee County. To view a full system map and route schedules, visit www.RideLeeTran.com, or plan your route using the transit option in Google Maps. You can also download the LeeFare app on Apple and Android devices, to plan a trip and track buses in real-time.

LeeTran began in 1974 with an interlocal agreement between Fort Myers and Cape Coral under which a private company operated a single route from Cape Coral to downtown Fort Myers. The county took over the operations of the transit system in 1977 to connect communities and enhance mobility as it grew to the system it is today.

Founded on the principle of serving the community with excellence, LeeTran has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of residents and visitors. During five decades, it has expanded its fleet, introduced innovative technologies and services such as its latest ULTRA On-Demand service and implemented sustainable elements like hybrid vehicles.

“Reaching this significant milestone is a testament to the dedication and commitment of our team, past and present, as well as the unwavering support of the Lee Board of County Commissioners and the Lee County community,” said Dominic Gemelli, director of Lee County Transit. “We are immensely proud of the role we’ve played in enhancing mobility and improving the quality of life for the people we serve.”

LeeTran operates 25 bus routes and a paratransit service known as Passport. LeeTran employs nearly 300 people and has a fleet of 39 full-size buses, 14 trolleys and 45 paratransit vans and 6 micro transit vehicles. To learn more about the services offered by LeeTran, or for schedule and fare information, call 239-LEE-TRAN, or visit www.RideLeeTran.com.
