A 16-year-old youth was arrested Wednesday after Cape Coral Police received multiple calls that “an unknown child” had used Snapchat to send out a threat to shoot up Cape Coral High School and Mariner High School today.

Officers met with one of the callers, a concerned father and son, at Kurt Donaldson Community Park on Hancock Bridge Parkway, the CCPD said in a release, adding they had screenshots of the Snapchat threats to include a username and provided the information to the officers.

“Detectives immediately launched an investigation with our School Resource Officers to gather information,” the release states. “Detectives quickly located/identified the student responsible, who said the threat was a prank.”

The youth attends North Fort Myers High School. He was arrested at 9:24 p.m. and subsequently taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

He was charged with making Written or Electronic Threats to Conduct a Mass Shooting, a felony.

“All threats have been thoroughly investigated, and Detectives concluded there is no threat to school safety or public safety at this time,” police said.
