A Cape Coral high school student is in jail after being arrested March 13 in connection with a robbery at a Publix three days earlier.

Cape Coral Police officers arrested Matthew Bryan Sorge, 19, for robbery with a weapon and resisting arrest without violence on Wednesday.

On Sunday, March 10, at around noon, Cape Police responded to suspected robbery at a Publix at 1631 Del Prado Blvd. S. The caller said a male suspect pulled a knife on a Publix employee who confronted him about shoplifting. The suspect was described as wearing a black face mask, blue hoodie and a black backpack, appeared to be in his 20s, and left on a black bicycle.

Cape detectives reviewed the security camera footage, which showed the suspect walking into the store wearing blue jeans, a tan hoodie, gray Vans shoes and a mask over his face. He went into the family bathroom and 10 minutes later, exited wearing a dark sweatshirt and sweatpants with the mask still on. He then picked up a deodorant and put it in his the side pocket of his backpack.

Meanwhile, on March 11, the School Resource Officer from North Nicholas High School called investigators, saying a student told him they overheard Sorge bragging about committing a robbery at Publix. The student said other students were pointing out Sorge had the same Vans shoes as seen on the suspect in the still photos from the robbery.

When detectives talked to Sorge, his story about his whereabouts on Sunday was inconsistent during the interview. Sorge was wearing gray Crocs during the interview. Surveillance video from the school showed he went to school Monday wearing Vans shoes, and after the confession to students, apparently switched with another student to the gray Crocs. That student told detectives after they switched shoes, Sorge asked him to throw the Vans into a nearby lake.

Detectives say they found one of the Vans shoes on the shoreline of that lake.

On March 13, Sorge agreed to be interviewed again. As the detective approached him to begin the interview, Sorge backed away saying “Don’t touch me” and began running away. The detective gave loud verbal commands for Sorge to stop and while running, Sorge admitted to the robbery. The detective caught up with Sorge with the help of some good Samaritans and performed a controlled takedown. The detective said Sorge continued to resist his efforts to handcuff him before he was taken to the Lee County Jail.

Sorge is charged with the following:

One count of robbery with a weapon

One count of resisting arrest without violence.
