Three teens have been charged in connection to a reported car theft in Cape Coral.

Two males and one female, all aged 14, were arrested by Cape Coral Police Department officers and charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle.

One of the boys and the girl also were charged with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, and criminal mischief.

According to a release from the Cape Coral Police Department, on the morning of Jan. 23, officers went to the 1900 block of Southeast 14th Street in reference to a past car theft.

Police say the caller stated she accidentally left the key fob in her rental car, and noticed the car was gone from the driveway the next morning.

“Investigating officers went door to door and discovered multiple car burglaries in the surrounding area,” the release states. “Officers discovered video evidence of three juveniles, who appeared to be two males and one female, entering unlocked cars and checking to see if the vehicles would start.”

The stolen vehicle was “quickly found and recovered” in the McDonald’s parking lot at 1715 Del Prado Blvd. Police said the three teens were found in the car.

“The investigation revealed that all three juveniles burglarized multiple vehicles and ultimately stole a rental car,” CCPD officials said. “Follow-up investigations are still being actively completed for associated vehicle burglaries.

“While conducting the investigation into the stolen vehicle, detectives also established probable cause for an incident that occurred on January 19th, 2024. The victim of that crime reported their residence was burglarized and the suspects caused approximately $1,000.00 in damage.”

All three teens were arrested and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
