Veterans resources luncheon set for Jan. 16

RSVP deadline is Thursday

By MEGHAN BRADBURY - | Jan 9, 2024

A free luncheon will be provided for veterans next week to help connect them with available resources.

Hosted by the city of Cape Coral and Lee County, the luncheon will be held Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Lake Kennedy Center. Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by Thursday, Jan. 11, by emailing jcostell@capecoral.gov, or calling 239-242-3972.

“The city of Cape Coral boasts a large veteran population, and it is the mayor’s priority to expand access to essential resources for Cape Coral’s veterans. Partnering with Lee County Human and Veteran Services allows our veterans to connect with advisors without having to travel far from home,” city spokesperson Lauren Kurkimilis said.

The luncheon will be catered by Mission BBQ and a presentation by the Lee County Veteran Services team will be shared with attendees.

Kurkimilis said the luncheon also will provide a chance for veterans to sign up for a one-on-one support coordination appointment.

“We felt that the luncheon would be the perfect opportunity for those veterans at the luncheon to see the Veteran Services staff in person and be able to schedule an appointment,” said Rodney Van Ness, Veterans Services manager for the Lee County Department of Human & Veterans Services. “We look forward to engaging with the city of Cape Coral and use of their facility to better meet the needs of the growing veteran population within Lee County.”

Some of the benefits the Lee County Veteran Services team provides for veterans, surviving spouses and dependents include information on disability compensation, appeals, burial benefits, education benefits, health benefits and non-service-connected pensions.

Kurkimilis said as a Purple Heart City, the service and sacrifices of veterans are respected here.

“Investing in this initiative allows Cape Coral to ensure our local veterans make the most of the benefits they have earned. Expanding access to resources for local veterans is proven to improve mental and physical health outcomes. Bolstering this kind of support also fosters community well-being and strengthens social cohesion, contributing to a stronger community,” she said.

Lake Kennedy Center is at 400 Santa Barbara Blvd.
