Two residents die when car crashes into Cape canal

By CJ HADDAD - | Nov 13, 2023

A single-vehicle incident that ended with a car crashing into a city canal resulted in the death of two Cape Coral residents.

According to a report from the Cape Coral Police Department, Howard Cooper, 94, and Marilyn Cooper, 88, suffered fatal injuries Sunday afternoon after their car exited the roadway at the end of a cul-de-sac, hit a palm tree and continued over a seawall into a canal.

CCPD officials reported Howard Cooper was driving westbound on Kismet Parkway West approaching a cul-de-sac, and “failed to stop or turn along with the cul-de-sac and continued straight, westbound off the roadway into the grass yard.”

CCPD officials stated the car then struck a palm tree in the yard and entered the canal. No one was observed exiting the vehicle.

Police said alcohol or drugs are not a factor in the crash, nor is speed.

CCPD asks if anyone witnessed the crash or has information, to contact them at 239-574-3223, or by submitting a tip to CCPDtips@capecoral.gov. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS using case report No. 23036791.
