By Staff | Feb 1, 2023

A Pennsylvania man died Tuesday, Jan. 31, from injuries he suffered when his bicycle collided with a pickup truck on Country Club Boulevard in Cape Coral.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department report, officers responded to the scene of the vehicle versus pedestrian accident in the 1400 block of Country Club Boulevard at 3:58 p.m. Tuesday.

The CCPD report indicates that the bicyclist, Lee Earl Cavanaugh, 71, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., was traveling north on Country Club Boulevard on the sidewalk on the east side of the road when he came upon a portion of the sidewalk that was closed and rode his bicycle into the outside right lane of the street.

Darting onto the roadway, Cavanaugh rode his bike into the path of a Ram 3500 pickup pulling a dump trailer driven by Carlos Mendoza Garcia, 39, of Fort Myers. Police said Garcia had slowed and swerved within the lane in an attempt to avoid the collision. At the time of the crash, vehicles occupied the left lane of Country Club and the pickup was unable to avoid the collision.

Cavanaugh was struck by the passenger side of the pickup and the trailer, and was ejected from his bicycle. He was transported to Cape Coral Hospital where he passed away a short time later.

Garcia was uninjured.

The accident is still under investigation, police said. If you witnessed this traffic crash or have information about this traffic crash, please contact the Cape Coral Police Department by calling 239-574-3223, or submit a tip to CCPDtips@capecoral.gov
