Cape man found guilty, sentenced on drugs, gun possession charges

By Staff | May 26, 2022

Joe McCant III, 39, of Cape Coral, was adjudicated guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison, as a habitual felony offender, for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, three counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of marijuana.

On April 24, 2020, a staff officer with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Community Response Unit Special Enforcement Team conducted a traffic stop on a car with a defective tag light on Summerlin Road in Fort Myers. The vehicle, driven by the defendant, pulled over and a strong smell of marijuana was emitting from inside of the car.

The defendant admitted he did not have a medical marijuana card and when searched had a black container in his pants containing marijuana, which he admitted belonged to him.

The vehicle was searched and a firearm and a magazine for the gun was found, as well as multiple plastic baggies inside of a cup that contained substances that appeared to be various drugs including cocaine and methamphetamine.

The defendant was arrested and taken into custody.

Assistant State Attorney John Dommerich Jr., Lee County Assistant Felony Division Chief, prosecuted the case.
