A Cape Coral man has been sentenced to 25 year in prison on charges stemming from a 2020 shooting incident.

Steven Wayne Masek, 56, was found guilty as charged of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated assault with a firearm, battery, possession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted felon, and possession of a short-barrel shotgun.

He was immediately sentenced to 25 years in prison on count one, the State Attorney’s Office said in a release issued Friday.

He was sentenced to five years in prison on the other counts, which are to run concurrently.

The jury returned the guilty verdict following a three-day trial in Lee County.

In April 2020, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a Lee County residence after getting reports of someone being shot. There were two victims at the scene. A female had a head injury and said she had been hit in the head with the butt of a shotgun by the defendant. A second victim, the woman’s adult son, had a gunshot wound to the leg. Both identified Masek as their attacker.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit further investigated and that led to the arrest of the defendant.

Assistant State Attorney Taryn Vaughn and Assistant State Attorney Erin Hughes prosecuted the case.
