Veterans from Legion Post 90 address students at Mariner High

By Staff | Dec 2, 2021

As a part of American Legion Post 90 Cape Coral community involvement, three veterans from Post 90 recently went to Mariner High School to address over 150 students who are in Mariner’s Junior ROTC program. Coordinating with school officials, Principal Dr. Thomas Michel and ROTC director Bryan Williams, the Post 90 veterans gave the students a short presentation on the military in general and their individual experiences while serving.

Carl Saita, who heads Post 90’s Honor Guard and spent several years in the Army as a drill instructor, and law enforcement officer Harry Finke, who served in the Navy in Japan, and Bill McKernan who served in Vietnam in the Air Force gave the students a broad look at military service.

The three veterans also stressed the advantages of military benefits and preparation for life after serving.

All three used the educational benefits to prepare for civilian life. Saita used his training for a career in law enforcement, Finke went on to pharmacy school and became a pharmacist and college professor of pharmacology, and McKernan got his MBA and had a successful career with AT&T.

All three also emphasized the importance of the military in shaping their character and discipline.
