Cape Coral City Council has appointed Councilmember John Gunter as the city’s new mayor. He will fill the unexpired term of Mayor Joe Coviello, who died Jan. 13.

Council took three votes: whether to fill the mayoral vacancy by appointment; whether to appoint someone currently serving on council and then for the appointment itself.

The vote was 7-0 to have Council appoint to fill the vacancy, then 4-3 to appoint from a member of Council.

The vote for Gunter was 6-1 with Councilmember Rick Williams, the only other council member to volunteer to fill the vacancy, dissenting.
