Stokes takes District 5 seat

By Staff | Nov 7, 2017

Dave Stokes culled an easy victory over James Schneider, winning the District 5 Cape Coral City Council seat with 67 percent of the vote Tuesday night.

With all precincts reporting, Stokes received 12,369 votes to Schneider’s 5,925.

Both candidates were at their homes awaiting the results of the election.

Stokes, a 15-year-resident of the Cape and a Charlotte County firefighter/paramedic, looked forward to serving.

“I was very pleased and honored that the citizens trusted to vote for me to have this responsibility, to run a positive campaign, what I was going to do to help the city and people saw that,” Stokes said.

Still, he was disappointed that turnout was lower than he had anticipated. Turnout was little more than 18 percent for the cities of Cape Coral and Fort Myers combined.

“It was disappointing that the turnout was low this year,” Stokes said. “I hope to see a bigger turnout eventually.”

Schneider, a Realtor who has served as a Council-appointed Planning and Zoning Commissioner for three years, thanked his supporters.

“Thank you to the almost 6,000 people who could see through the garbage slinging and endorsements to have confidence in me,” Schneider said via email. “Congratulations to Mr. Stokes. I hope he works for the citizens of Cape Coral.”

Stokes looks forward to continue serving the city that he loves by keeping people’s taxes low and to work hard for the citizens of Cape Coral.
