In among the few non-partisan races on the ballot, the Lee County School Board races provided two close battles, with one not having to worry about the November ballot.

In District 2, incumbent Jeanne S. Dozier took a narrow victory over former school board member Robert “Bob” Chilmonik by a 40.4 percent to 34.1 percent margin, well ahead of third-place vote-getter Paul Schafer (19 percent) and Victor Dotres (6.4 percent).

Dozier, who is running for her fourth term, and Chilmonik, who served on the school board from 2002-10, will do battle in the Nov. 6 general election as the top two vote getters.

In the District 3, Cathleen Morgan edged out Les Cochran 53.5 percent to 46.5 percent to win that seat, since she earned more than 50.1 percent of the vote.

Dozier, who commended Schafer for his strong showing and support, said she will continue to run on her record.

“I appreciate the support the community has given me and am humbled for the opportunity to go to the November election,” Dozier said. “I plan to stay on the message and run on my record and accomplishments.”

Chilmonik, who ran for a seat on the Lee County Board of Commissioners two years ago and lost, said he was happy to get the amount of votes he got, especially after being out of the public eye for two years.

“We expected Morgan and I would have a run off. I’m happy I exceeded the votes I got in the commissioner’s race in 2010,” Chilmonik said. “She’s the incumbent with 12 years and we both have name recognition. I’m enthusiastic.”

Both Chilmonik and Dozier look forward to facing each other in November.

“I’m looking forward to speak about improved transportation, neighborhood schools, our reading problems in Lee County and fiscal accountability and how our money is spent,” Chilmonik said.

“I’m going to stay on my record of accomplishments we’ve made and hope voters continue to support me,” Dozier reiterated.
