New LAMP name to be decided on Sept. 7

By MEGHAN BRADBURY - | Sep 1, 2022

The School Board of Lee County will decide next week whether to rename its Lee Adolescent Mother’s Program the Young Parent Education Program.

LAMP, which is state funded, is a program that provides educational, health and social services to teen parents and their children, which has changed over the years to now include participation from fathers. According to a July school board meeting there were 63 youth and teens enrolled in the program.

Clayton Simmons, executive director of school development, said the first survey revealed the recommended names Lee Teen Parent Program, Parent Education Program, Student Education Parent Program and Young Parent Education Program. He said the two with the highest votes included Young Parent Education Program and Lee Teen Parent Program.

“It was a very small narrow margin of a difference between the two. Those two names were submitted to the selection committee. Their recommendation was the Young Parent Education Program because the program services students that are not teens,” Simmons said.

Board chair Debbie Jordan agreed that “Young Parent Education Program” is a good choice.

“I think that this is a fresh start and I think this is good,”“she said.

Board member Mary Fischer also agreed, saying that leaving the word teen out was a good decision.

“I hope this will help the program,” she said.

The proposed name change for will be voted on at the Sept. 7 board meeting.

The school board will meet at 6 p.m. at the district offices, which are located at 2855 Colonial Blvd., in Fort Myers.
