Urgent Care Center

The Urgent Care Center (U.C.C.) of Southwest Florida continues its celebrating Urgent Care Awareness Week through Nov. 15. The public is invited to visit their state-of-the art facilities, and take advantage of a free blood pressure screening. This special week was established for the first time this year by The Urgent Care Association of America.

They provide walk-in, extended hour medical care for conditions such as cuts and lacerations, sprains/strains, colds, fever, flu, insect bites, ear infections, rashes, backaches, vomiting and diarrhea, stomach aches, simple fractures, and many other illnesses that are not life or limb threatening. They are open seven days a week and evenings to meet almost any schedule and patients can go online for an appointment, although no appointment is necessary. Open House hours and screenings for Urgent Care Awareness Week coincide with the Centers’ operating hours at Cape Coral location: M-F 8 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sunday. 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Cape Coral Hospital tour

Interactive expo at Cape Coral Hospital on Sunday, Nov. 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. See, touch, examine and participate in mock surgical cases. Tour areas include: Same Day Surgery, Operating Room, Post Anesthesia Care Recovery.

Tours are continuous and meet in the hospital lobby. No registration necessary.

November Events at Juniper Village.

Juniper Village at Cape Coral, an assisted living community, is hosting their second annual food drive to benefit the Cape Coral Caring Center.

Each person who drops off a canned good will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gas card. The drawing will be held at 5 p.m on Nov. 30.

Take a tour, and your name will be entered three times!

A program, Journey Through Your Golden Years: What You Need to Know” will be Thursday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m.

Stroke and Osteoporosis Screening

The complete screening package now includes a new Heart Rhythm screening which checks for irregular heartbeat, a major risk factor for stroke.

Life Line Screening will be at the Cape Coral Elks Lodge #2596 on Nov. 17 at 4631 S.E 10th Place. Appointments will begin at 9 a.m.

VNA Flu shots

The Visiting Association of Southwest Florida (VNA) will provide flu and pneumonia shots at locations throughout Lee County, to persons 9 years of age and older. VNA will bill Medicare Part B for covered beneficiaries. Bring your Medicare card. The charges are: Flu shot $30, pneumonia $40.

Suicide Prevention Walk

C.A.R.E.S. Suicide Prevention will host the Second Annual Suicide Prevention Walk

On Saturday, Nov. 22, (rain or shine) registration starts at 10 a.m., Walk starts at noon. The walk will be held at Tarpon Point Marina, 5902 Silver King Blvd.

Registration is $10. per walker and includes t-shirt, water and lunch

Walk and remember loved ones lost to suicide. Bring friends: The Walk is an opportunity to bring the issues of suicide prevention and awareness into the community and the more of us who walk; the more we will be seen.

To recognize a loved one at the walk, consider carrying a sign, banner or photo. If walking with a team, choose to all wear the same color.

Senior Friendship Centers

Daily hot lunches are provided at 11 Lee County “Friendship Cafe’s” to people 60 plus and volunteers of all ages. The cafes also offer free exercise programs, arts and crafts and more.

Local Friendship Cafe is located at Lake Kennedy Senior Center, 400 Santa Barbara Blvd., from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday to Friday. Reservations for meals are required 24-hours in advance. A $3 donation is suggested to help cover the cost of the meals, however no one is denied a meal if unable to donate. You do not have to be a Lake Kennedy Senior Center member to attend.

Rhythm in Motion Dance Academy

Yoga classes are now being held at the Rhythm In Motion Dance Academy.

Brucie, Doris and Judi of the Purusha Center are offering several yoga classes per week. The program is really taking off, and classes are filling up fast.

Thanksgiving Benefit

Anyone who plans on an oven-roasted or smoked turkey, a ham or a perfect pie this Thanksgiving should do their shopping at one of the following Lee Memorial Health System hospitals: Cape Coral Hospital, Lee Memorial Hospital, HealthPark Medical Center, Gulf Coast Hospital, or Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center.

Lee Memorial Health System has teamed up with Mason’s Bakery and the HoneyBaked Ham Company again this year for a fund-raiser to benefit those in the armed services.

Choose seven- or nine-pound spiral hams, roasted or smoked turkey breasts, or a roasted or smoked whole turkey for dinner. Nine-inch pies come in six flavors, including apple, pumpkin, pecan, chocolate cream, peanut butter cream, and key lime. Assorted mini dessert boxes with 30 pieces of desserts will be sold for $20. Pies are $12 to $14 each and meats range from $25 to $60.

A portion of each sale will be donated to the LMHS Military Support Fund. Order forms are available at Mason’s Bakery, 1615 Hendry St. in downtown Fort Myers, and at the HoneyBaked Ham Company, 11701 S. Cleveland Ave. in Fort Myers. You can also have an order form mailed, faxed, or emailed to you by calling 343-9690.

The deadline to place an order is Wednesday, Nov. 19. Checks and money order (payable to “LMHS Military Support”) forms must be received by then.

Orders must be picked up either Monday, Nov. 24, or Tuesday, Nov 25. Times and locations for pickup are listed on the order form.

Ice packs will be given with meat products. Desserts must be refrigerated within 24 hours after pickup.

No refunds will be given if you fail to pick up your order.

Robb & Stucky to host art show

In recognition of National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and in conjunction with the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center, Robb & Stucky Interiors will host an art show and display of artwork featuring paintings by individuals experiencing various stages of Alzheimer’s disease or other memory impairment.

The public is invited to view the artwork during regular store hours through Nov. 21 at Robb & Stucky Interiors, located at 13170 S. Cleveland Ave. in Fort Myers. Store hours are Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m.

Workshop set

There will be a free workshop on how parents can continue to live safely and comfortably in their own homes as they age with dignity on Saturday Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.,at Hodges University, 4501 Colonial Blvd. Fort Myers.

The topics to be discussed include: A total health care solution for seniors;

Making parents’ home safer; Helping parents prepare a financial plan; How parents can leverage their home equity.

CPR Certification class

This course provides basic life support for healthcare providers, offering a two year certification of completion of the course. This certification is required for healthcare students and healthcare workers. The two-hour classes will be held from 9 until 11 a.m. on Saturday and from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday on: Nov. 15, and 18, at Edison College, 8099 College Parkway in Fort Myers.

FGCU Students To Host ‘Marrowthon’ On Campus

National Marrow Donor Program, in conjunction with Community Blood Centers of South Florida, has partnered with students from Florida Gulf Coast University to host an FGCU Marrowthon on Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m on campus between the Wellness Center and Howard Hall.

The event, an FGCU capstone project, is about fulfilling an unmet need and trying to make a difference, with the mindset of thinking globally and acting locally. One group is directing their efforts to help raise awareness about the need for bone marrow and cord blood donors by helping recruit students to register for the NMDP donor list.

Donors must be in good health and over 18 years old. After joining, donors remain on the registry until they reach the age of 61 unless they request to be removed. Donating is voluntary, even after joining the registry.

Health Department Offers Shots To All – Free For Children

The Lee County Health Department is administering influenza vaccine at its 3920 Michigan Avenue facility. From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Medicare Part B covers the cost; otherwise shots are $30 for flu shots, and $40 for pneumonia shots.

People who should get vaccinated each year are:

— Children aged 6 months up to their 19th birthday

— Pregnant women

— People 50 years of age and older

— People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions

— People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities

— People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu, including:
