CCPD investigating incident deemed attempted murder-suicide

By CJ HADDAD - | Jun 3, 2024

A shooting that left one man dead and a woman wounded is the result of an attempted murder-suicide, Cape Coral police said today.

Officers responded to a home in the 1400 block of Southwest 4th Court just before 8 p.m. Sunday in reference to a shooting, Cape Coral Police Department officials said.

Arriving officers found a female with serious gunshot injuries and a deceased male, identified as Joseph William Johnson, 88.

“Officers applied life-saving measures to the female victim, who was transported to the hospital,” CCPD officials stated in a release.

CCPD Public Affairs Officer Lisa Greenberg told The Breeze Johnson and the wounded woman were in a relationship.

Police also stated that Johnson used a handgun to shoot the woman before turning the gun on himself.

“A suicide note he left behind talked about Johnson and the victim ending their lives together,” CCPD officials stated.

Police said the woman remains in the hospital with “serious injuries.”

Greenberg told The Breeze it was the woman who initially called 9-1-1.

Police say any additional information will be released as it becomes available.
