Southwest Airlines expects return to ‘normal operations’ by Friday

By CJ HADDAD - | Dec 29, 2022

Passengers at Southwest Florida International Airport traveling via Southwest Airlines have felt frustration as of late. The major airliner said on Thursday they plan to get back to “normal” as quickly as possible.

A Southwest Airlines spokesperson told The Breeze via email that they were operating at one-third of their schedule on Thursday, and that “We plan to return to normal operations with minimal disruptions on Friday, Dec. 30.”

RSW Chief Communications & Marketing Officer Victoria Moreland told The Breeze via email that on Wednesday, there were 46 flights cancelled throughout the airport, with 42 being Southwest flights.

She added that there are no people staying at RSW for “long periods of time” due to the dozens of cancellations.

“The decision to operate, cancel or delay flight is made by the airline, not the airport,” Moreland said.

While Southwest did not give a reason for the cancellations, officials said, “We are encouraged by the progress we’ve made to realign crew, their schedules, and our fleet. With another holiday weekend full of important connections for our valued customers and employees, we are eager to return to a state of normalcy.”

“We know even our deepest apologies — to our customers, to our employees, and to all affected through this disruption –only go so far.”

Southwest has set up a page at www.Southwest.com/traveldisruption for customers to submit refund and reimbursement requests for meals, hotel, and alternate transportation, as well as to connect customers to their baggage.

“We have much work ahead of us, including investing in new solutions to manage wide-scale disruptions,” Southwest said.
