Confirmed cases of swine flu rise to 259 in N.Y.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – Health officials say New York has 15 new cases of swine flu, bringing the total confirmed to 259.

Health Commissioner Richard Daines says Monday the cases include eight in New York City, where the number stands at 186. The total of new cases outside the city rose to 73, with five in Nassau County and one each in Westchester and Suffolk counties.

Many cases of H1N1 virus infection have been mild, with symptoms resembling those of seasonal flu – fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and chills The latest update comes a day after the state’s first death linked to the virus. Mitchell Wiener (WEE’-ner), an assistant principal at a New York City school, died Sunday after being hospitalized since Wednesday.
