U.S. Army Pfc. Matthew L. Schmidt underwent basic training and advanced individual training in the summer of 2008.

He is currently stationed at Fort Stewart, Ga., as a 3rd battalion combat engineer. Schmidt is scheduled to be deployed to Iraq in December.

He is the son of Sandy Schmidt.

Schmidt was born and raised in North Fort Myers.

He went to Mariner High School and joined the Army in 2008 at the end of the school year.
