Jailed Sudan opposition leader’s family concerned

KHARTOUM, Sudan (A) – The family of a detained Sudanese opposition leader says the continued incarceration of the 76-year old may endanger his health.

The family statement issued Sunday says no charges have been pressed against Hassan Turabi 11 days after his capture.

The family says it tried to visit him Sunday but authorities said he had been moved from his Khartoum prison to one 700 kilometers from the capital.

Turabi was arrested after he urged Sudan’s president to hand himself over to an international court seeking to prosecute him for genocide crimes in Darfur.

Turabi, who heads the People’s Congress Party, was once an ally of the president and architect of Sudan’s Islamist government.

A court decision on the case is expected to be handed down soon.
