5th Annual SOAR Dance today

1 min read

The 5th Annual Special Olympics Adaptive Recreation end of the semester dance is scheduled for today, Dec. 13. Middle school students with special needs such as social functioning, social emerging, life skills and functional skills are invited to just keep swimming.

“The theme is Under the Sea, honoring Nemo and his determination, and success, in overcoming disability,” said Jennifer Kuehl, behavioral specialist at Paul Lawrence Dunbar Middle School. “There are quite a few resources out there regarding how the ‘Finding Nemo’ franchise has done much to promote disability acceptance and strength in the face of adversity, and we hope this year’s theme can serve as both inspiration and instruction in the lead-up to the event.”

The students who attend will be served lunch, get their picture taken in the photo booth, have the chance to do arts and crafts projects, visit game stations or play 3 on 3 basketball on the outdoor courts. It is a chance for them to develop friendships outside their normal school day. At least 12 schools have committed to attending.

The SOAR Dance is being held from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the gym at Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School at 4750 Winkler Ave. in Fort Myers.
