Naples ends Ida Baker’s five-game winning streak
Two mishandled pop flies in the outfield in the fifth inning opened the door for Naples to swipe a 4-3 victory from Ida Baker Monday night snapping the Bulldogs’ five-game winning streak.
The Eagles’ two-run rally tied the game at 3-3 while the third single coming in the sixth inning produced the game-winning run. The Eagles (15-3) collected a total of nine hits in the game.
Bryce VanHorn started for the Bulldogs (15-3) and stuck out three while allowing one earned run over 2 1/2 innings. Christian Menendez (0-2) pitched through the sixth inning and was tagged with the loss while allowing three earned runs with three strikeouts.
Matt McGarty had two singles for the Bulldogs, who were limited to just four base hits.
The Bulldogs’ game at LaBelle Tuesday was cancelled due to the weather.
Softball
Cape Coral 15, Island Coast 0: Makenzie Buss clubbed a three-run homer in the third inning to end Cape’s mercy-rule shutout victory over Island Coast last Thursday.
Buss (13-5) allowed one hit and struck out five in her three-inning victory. Sara Brilhart drove in a pair of runs and scored two with a pair of base hits. Bre Lopez also contributed two hits and scored two runs.
The Seahawks (13-6) scored 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning to end it. They return to the diamond on April 5 at Estero.
Ida Baker 14, Cypress Lake 4: Denia Bent drove in three runs with three doubles last Thursday to lead Baker’s 10-run victory.
Kristabella Harris also contributed three hits with Jasmine Casiano driving in three runs for the Bulldogs (6-14).
Mariner 16, Port Charlotte 0: Mariner scored eight runs in the first and seventh innings last Thursday to shut out Port Charlotte.
Hannah Holloway (14-5) struck out 10 batters and allowed just two hits to earn the win.
Madison James drove in two runs with a pair of doubles while Abby Love added two hits and scored two runs and Amanda Myers drove in a run and scored twice.
The Tritons play Fort Myers on April 6.
