Local wrestlers headed to boys FHSAA State Championships this week
A number of local wrestlers have earned the right to compete in the FHSAA State Championships this week in Kissimmee.
Bishop Verot High’s Bennett Sweitzer, who earned the 1A-3 regional title in the 175-pound division, will be joined by teammates Hudson Sweitzer (third at 120), Tiago Passos (fourth at 132) and Quinn Enguita (third at 215) at the state finals.
Lucas Lopes of Island Coast also qualified with a third place finish at 144 pounds at the 1A-3 meet.
Along with the qualifiers from North Fort Myers High (see related story), Mariner will be represented after a strong showing at the Region 2A-3 meet.
Vince Wurtsbaugh (second at 120), Ryan Boos (fourth at 126), Toby Pearce (third at 150) and Joe Laviola (fourth at 157) are also headed to Kissimmee.
One other local wrestler from that 2A-3 meet will also be competing in the state finals. Ezequiel Pedraza of Cape Coral earned the runner-up spot in the 190-pound division.
The state championships begin Thursday and continue through Saturday in Kissimmee.
