Verot’s Davis captures state weightlifting titles

BASEBALL

District 5A-11

North Fort Myers 5, Riverdale 4 (8 innings): Matthew Blasena had a grand slam to lead North, but it was Ethan Rodriguez who drove in the winning run in extra innings. The Red Knights (15-9) face 16-9 Charlotte in today’s semifinals.

Mariner 16, Cape Coral 11: Jacob Gorra (3-for-3) had five RBI for the winners, while Morgan Waltz and Kelan Jamison drove in three runs each for the Tritons (17-9). PJ Marino and Colin Raftery added two RBI each. Kellen Engehart matched Gorra, bringing in five Seahawks runs. Derek Hooker and Landon Frazin had two RBI each for Cape Coral (5-19),

LCAC Tournament

Mariner 2, Estero 1: Gabi Winters held Estero to three hits and a run while striking out 16. Calliegh Buzard hit a solo home run and doubled for Mariner (15-4). Morgan Tucker drove in the other Tritons run.

Riverdale 6, Cape Coral 3: Jocelyn Slater, Gabriela Gonzalez and Allie Buice drove in the runs for the Seahawks (15-5), who face Gateway on Tuesday. 

North Fort Myers 19, Ida Baker 9 (6 innings): Abigail Hynes hit two home runs and had three RBI for the Red Knights (14-5), while Mia Lane homered and had three RBI. Audrie Florenzano, Izabella Spohn, Bella Miceli, Alison Smith and Liliana Hertzog added two RBI each. Ida Baker’s Kaiden Nealeigh drove in three runs, while Jaslene Rosado and Pela Kolinsi had two RBI each.

South Fort Myers 22, Island Coast 10: The Gators fell to 2-14.

The Oasis Sharks saw their season come to an end on the first day of the district tournament. 

Michael Abreu, Luciano Demalghaes, Brendan Overbaugh and Emmanuel Diaz had singles wins, and Nate Orozco teamed up with Abreu for a doubles victory.

BOYS WEIGHTLIFTING

FHSAA Championships

Justin Davis of Bishop Verot is the state 183-pound Class 1A champion in both the traditional lift and the Olympic lift on Saturday in Lakeland.

Ida Baker’s Jacob Preshard came in fourth at 169 pounds in the traditional and 10th in the Olympic lift in Class 3A.

Nikolas Korf of Ida Baker finished fifth in 3A in the traditional lift at 183 pounds and eighth in the Olympic lift.

Bishop Verot’s Sonny Tokotaha was 10th in Class 1A in the 238-pound Olympic lift.

Longshore Tournament

North Fort Myers 5, Immokalee 0: Marissa Allen and Jordyn Prado combined on a pitching shutout for the Red Knights (13-6). Prado, Mia Lane (three hits) and Alison Smith had an RBI each. Abigail Hynes, who sat out both Friday tournament games, extended her hitting streak to 16 games.

Bishop Verot 11, West Broward 3: Alexalys Torres doubled, driving in three runs, and both Willa Pagnutti and Jaelyn Riley had two RBI for the Vikings (13-5). McKenna Robbins had three hits and scored three times.

Oasis 8, Ida Baker 7: Braylen Cody’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Oasis (8-12) the victory. Chuck Sipe had two RBI for the Sharks. For the Bulldogs (11-13), Cole Lewis drove in three runs and Aiden Long had two RBI.

Bishop Verot 11,  St. John Neumann 1 (5 innings): Joey Lawson pitched a five-inning no-hitter despite giving up an unearned run. At the plate, Lawson had a solo home run. Brody Baxmann and Nico Ayers had two RBI each for 24-1 Bishop Verot. 

SOFTBALL

Cape Coral 25, East Lee County 6 (3 innings): Jocelyn Slater was 3-for-3 with a homer and a double, driving in four runs and scoring three for the Seahawks (15-4). Cheyenne Sharb had three RBI and three runs scored. Emma Brannon hit a solo home run and scored three times. Two Cape Coral pitchers limited East Lee County to a single hit, but the Jaguars scored six unearned runs.

Longshore Tournament

North Fort Myers 14, Naples 0: Jordyn Prado and Kaliyah Willaims combined on a no-hit, no-walk shutout with 11 strikeouts over five innings. An error prevented it from being a perfect game. Williams, Prado and Mia Lane had three RBI each. Abigail Smith added two RBI. 

Somerset Academy 9, North Fort Myers 5: Mia Lane doubled and had two RBI for the Red Knights (13-6).

Bishop Verot 16, Cypress Lake 0 (4 innings): Paige Bettermann threw a five-inning one-hitter for the Vikings. McKenna Robbins pounded out five RBI on a 2-for-4 performance that included a home run. Willam Pagnutti went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, while Jaelyn Riley was 4-for-4, scoring four runs and driving in two.

BOYS WEIGHTLIFTING

FHSAA Championships

Nicholas Purdy of Mariner finished ninth in traditional lifting in the unlimited class at the Class 2A state championships in Lakeland on Friday.

Competition in classes 3A and 1A continue on Saturday.

BASEBALL

Ida Baker 13, Lely 0 (6 innings): Ely Mora, Cole Lewis and Brody Root drove in two runs each for the Bulldogs (11-12). Nick Conticelli held Lely to one hit in five innings for the win.

Island Coast 5, ECS 4: The Gators (19-6) put up all five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 4-0 deficit. Grady Schweizer drove in two Island Coast runs, while Isaac Lopez, Nate Jaquez and Jayven Torres had one RBI each.

Bishop Verot 11, Out-of-Door Academy 1: Bishop Verot broke open a 1-all tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and six more in the sixth. Jake Sedmack drove in three runs with a double and a triple, and Nick Raber had two hits, including a triple, and two RBI. Braylog Sheffield had three hits and scored three times. 

Battle of the Border

North Fort Myers 9, Estero 4: Junior Tome and Alejandro Velez Rodriguez knocked in three runs each to pace the Red Knights (14-9). North scored its nine runs in the first two innings.

SOFTBALL

Mariner 3, Riverdale 1: Mia Standard doubled and drove in two runs for the Tritons (14-4). Gabi Winters allowed one unearned run on two hits while striking out 12.

Oasis 3, Babcock 2: Kyra Cavender struck out 13 over seven innings for the Sharks (12-8). She also had two hits, including a double. Emma Neujahr was 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, and Meesha Neujahr drove in a run.

Bishop Verot 4, SW Florida Christian 0: McKenna Robbins drove in two runs for the Vikings (10-5). Payton Breadmore pitched a complete-game shutout.

William Longshore Tournament

North Fort Myers 5, Barron Collier 2: Mia Lane had two hits and drove in two runs for the Red Knights (11-5), while Abigail Hynes had three hits and an RBI. Kaliyah Williams allowed two runs and struck out 11 in a complete game. Hynes extended her hitting streak to 15 games.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Cape Coral 5, Island Coast 0: The Seahawks edged above .500 to 5-4 on the season.

North Fort Myers 3, Lemon Bay 2: Harley Mendez, Mya Boyd-Kiphart, Aliyah Santiago, Alexa Maloney, Abigail Fitzgerald and Adrianna Delgado were members of winning pairs for the Red Knights (7-2).

GIRLS LACROSSE

District 1A-11

First round

Bishop Verot 22, Cypress Lake 1: Lily Lockard and Addison Wolfe had a huge match. Lockard scored seven goals, assisting on seven others. Wolfe scored 10 times, and Liz Schlager added five tallies. The Vikings advanced to a Monday semifinal against Canterbury. 

BOYS TENNIS

Oasis 5, Mariner 2: Nate Orozco and Michael Abreu won their singles matches and combined for a doubles win. Brendan Overbaugh took his singles match, and Emmanuel Diaz and Jacobo Herrera teamed up for a doubles victory.
