Brady, Tshiams capture state wrestling crowns
Other local grapplers earn top 10 finishes
Mariner’s Maximus Brady set some local wresting history Saturday, while Seth Tshiams of North Fort Myers made a bit of history for himself.
Brady won the Class 2A 138-pound state championship in the FHSAA State Finals. He earned the title by defeating Brady Jackson of Lincoln with a pin one minute into the match.
Brady became the Tritons’ first four-time state champion, and just the second in Lee County history (Scotti Sentes, Riverdale, 2005-2008).
With Saturday’s win, Brady finished his senior season at 27-0.
There have been seven five-time state champs in FHSAA history.
Tshiams became a first-time FHSAA champion, defeating Jaxon Newton of Charlotte by an 8-6 decision in the 2A 285-pound weight class. That completed a spectacular season in which Tshiams posted a 48-1 record in his senior season.
It was quite a successful state meet for the Red Knights overall. In addition to Tshiams, North’s Julian Gonzalez finished third at 165 pounds and teammate Solomon Lucas was fourth at 144.
Clark Daley of Mariner was the hard-luck grappler of the weekend. After beating his first two opponents at 190 pounds, he had to forfeit his semifinal and fifth-place matches due to an injury.
Other top-eight finishers: Kalel Hernandez of North (175) was seventh in Class 2A; in Class 1A, Hudson Sweitzer of Bishop Verot was sixth at 106, Bennett Sweitzer of the Vikings finished seventh at 175, and Oasis’ Frederick Harley Jr. was seventh at 215 pounds.
In the girls state competition, Gabriella Sergi of North Fort Myers finished sixth at 135 pounds.
