Mariner’s Emerick captures state title in weightlifting

Mariner’s Kassidy Emerick won the 110-pound Olympic weightlifting event Saturday in the FHSAA Class 2A state championships. Emerick added a third place in traditional lifting for good measure.

Her total of 285 pounds bested Anna Fiore of Riviera Beach Suncrest by five pounds for the Olympic championship. Fiore led 130-125 after the snatch lift, but Emerick bettered Fiore 160-150 in the clean and jerk to win the championship.

Emerick finished third in the traditional competition with a combined total of 300 pounds lifted in the bench press and clean and jerk.

Out of all weight classes, Emerick was listed as fourth-best lifter in the Olympic competition. The ranking is based on weight lifted in comparison to the competitor’s body weight.

Another Tritons lifter, Katie Campbell, finished ninth in the state in traditional weightlifting. Her lift total added up to 355 pounds.

REGION 1A-3

At Palmetto Ridge High School

Two North Fort Myers wrestlers and a Bishop Verot grappler are headed to the FHSAA Class 1A Finals after their performances in the region tournament in Naples.

Melanie Lamb of the Red Knights finished third at 140 pounds, and the Vikings’ Gabriella Vasquez was third at 105. The fourth-place wrestler at 105, North’s Isabella Hull, also qualified.

The FHSAA girls state championships are scheduled for March 2-4 at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.

CLASS 5A FINAL FOUR

Mariner 1, Tallahassee Lincoln 0: Ryleigh Acosta’s goal with about nine minutes remaining in regulation Friday propelled the defending Class 5A state champs into this year’s title match.

The Tritons edged Tallahassee Lincoln in a match held at Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee.

Mariner (18-4-1) will take on Plantation American Heritage (17-2-2), which rolled past Wesley Chapel Cypress Creek 6-0 in the other semifinal.

The Class 5A state championship is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand.

The Patriots are ranked No. 1 in Class 5A by the FHSAA and MaxPreps. Mariner is fourth.

Charlotte High ran away with the team championship at the District 2A-11 meet, with Port Charlotte a distant second, host North Fort Myers coming in third and Mariner fourth.

Maximus Brady (126 pounds) and Christopher Minto (160) won district weight class titles for Mariner. Judd Cole of Cape Coral won a title at 145.

The Seahawks’ Robert Albert (113) and Richard Albert (120) were second-place finishers, as were Justin Tobia (145) and Frank Cornelison (220) of North and Hansel Pompa-Mauri (152) and Chaos Sanchez (195) of Mariner.

Oasis came in second to First Baptist Academy in Friday’s district meet, led by 138-pound district champion Kealan Clifton.

Edward Nolan of Bishop Verot won the district title at 220 pounds.

The Sharks also had a number of district runners up: Camden Phillips (113), Ethan Bissler (120), Brandon Pinney (152) and Jackson Murnane (195). For the Vikings, Enzo Vasquez (106) and Jack Benaitis (285) finished second in their classes.

The Vikings’ Joseph Stross (113), Dashiell Fu (126), Cael Horton (138), Ethan Swanson (145), Liam Murphy (160) and Mason Mangold (195) also advance to regionals. Sharks grapplers Adrian Ross-Benninghoff (132), Christopher Conde (170), Adrian Cauceglia (182), Gabriel Fessel (220) and Logan Conley (285) move on as well.

District champion First Baptist had winners in nine weight classes.

Cape Coral 5, Riverdale 1: The Seahawks (3-0) got two goals each from Emmy Pardo and Ella Bernard. Mackenzie Scully added Cape’s fifth goal. Savannah Hickson made six saves for the Seahawks.
