CROSS COUNTRY

The Cape Coral and Bishop Verot boys, and the Oasis girls, are on their way to the FHSAA State Championship Meet after sterling performances in the Region 3A-3 and Region 2A-3 cross country meets Thursday at Holloway Park in Lakeland.

Leading the way will be Cape’s Declan Ziomek, the 3A-3 individual boys cross country district champion in a time of 16:00.0. Teammate William Canales finished fifth in 16:45.7.

As a team, the Seahawks finished second in 3A-3 to Fort Myers.

In Region 2A-3, Bishop Verot’s boys took third place. Andrew Marino was the first Viking to cross the finish line, coming in 8th with a 17:06.9 time. Four other Verot runners were in the top 21.

The Oasis girls earned a spot at state with a fourth-place finish in the regional meet. Jazlyn Forbes led the Sharks in 19:51.2, good for sixth overall.

The Oasis boys and Bishop Verot girls teams both posted 10th-place finishes.

The Vikings girls will be represented at states by Mackenzie De Lisle, third overall in a time of 19:02.0, and 12th-place finisher Kylie Thomas.

In 3A-3 girls competition, Cape Coral finished ninth and North Fort Myers 10, just missing the cut for the state meet.

GIRLS GOLF

Ida Baker’s Maggie Paolino and Gia Serrano will be playing in the Region 3A-3 tournament after being the top two golfers at district whose teams did not advance.

Paolino carded a round of 93 and Serrano a 100 at Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club in Sarasota.

The Region 3A-3 tournament will be Tuesday at Mission Inn Club & Resort-Las Colinas in Howey in the Hills, Florida.

FOOTBALL

Oasis 42, Bell Creek Academy 14: The Sharks opened the Sunshine State Athletic Conference playoffs with a resounding road victory in Riverview. Parker Smith, who was 8 of 12 passing, threw for three touchdowns, two to Jaxon McArdle Sykes and a third to Isiah Lozada. Lozada and McArdle Sykes both rushed for 86 yards and also ran for a touchdown each. Kyler Pudelski scored a two-point conversion, and led Oasis in tackles. Dane Dehany had a big game on defense as well. Joshua Sykes got back from the Region 3A-3 cross country meet in Lakeland in time to join the Sharks and kick three extra points.
