VOLLEYBALL

State playoffs: North Fort Myers, despite an upset loss in the District 5A-11 tournament semifinals, will play on as the state Class 5A tournament begins Wednesday. The Red Knights (15-4) were seeded fifth in Region 5A-3 and will play at No. 4 St. Petersburg (20-7) in the first round. Braden River, the 5A-11 champ, faces Naples in the first round. The top seed in the region is Barron Collier, which will take on No. 8 Tampa Freedom (10-4) on Wednesday.

The region semifinals are Oct. 29 and the final is Nov. 2. Once the state semifinals are held Nov. 5, the winners will have to wait a week before the championship Nov. 12.

CROSS COUNTRY

Oasis, which had never won a girls’ cross country meet before this season, captured the District 2A-6 championship Saturday in the district meet at North Port High School.

Bishop Verot dominated the field in the boys’ race, with six Vikings in the top 12 finishers. The Sharks had five of the top 27 girls runners, paced by Jazlyn Forbes (fifth overall, 18:50.0). Bishop Verot was fifth in the girls standings, with Mackenzie De Lisle crossing the line second with a time of 18:18.7. Teammate Kylie Thomas was ninth.

For the Verot boys, Grayson Tubbs was second overall in 16:32.5, with Andrew Marino, Cooper Banks and Zachary Engel placing fourth, fifth and sixth. Anton Becher of Verot was 10th.

Both the Oasis boys and Bishop Verot girls will join their district champion teammates in the Region 2A-3 meet Oct. 27 at Holloway Park in Lakeland.

The Sharks were eighth in the 2A-6 boys team standings. Truman Wiedner was 16, the top Oasis finisher.

FOOTBALL

Island Coast 16, Cape Coral 8: The Gators improved to 3-2 as special teams came up big for both sides. Diego Henderson scored the winning touchdown, returning a blocked field goal 94 yards for Island Coast. Cape’s Kalonji Hamilton ran a punt back 60 yards for a touchdown. Island Coast also got a 12-yard touchdown pass from Joshua Anderson to Jason Richarson, plus a pair of two-point conversion runs from Dustin Palladino. Blake Thomas caught a two-point conversion pass from Blake Thomas for the Seahawks (2-3).

North Fort Myers 38, Mariner 0: Gabriel Duross threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Red Knights (4-1) blanked the Tritons (3-3). Bo Summersett caught one of Duross’ scoring passes, and also ran for TDs of 6 and 5 yards. Jaden Jones and Daniel Newson also caught touchdown passes. The score was 12-0 at the half before North pulled away.

Riverdale 24, Ida Baker 10: The Bulldogs (3-2) were tied at 10 with the Raiders after three quarters. Cason Humble scored on a 1-yard run, and Jaden Danis kicked a 33-yard field goal for Ida Baker. The Bulldogs had one touchdown nullified by a penalty, and later couldn’t score despite Mike McDonald’s 71-yard run. Riverdale improved to 4-1.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal 35, Oasis 12: Jason McArdle-Sykes ran for a Sharks touchdown and caught a Parker Smith pass for a second TD. Oasis slipped to 1-4 with the loss to St. Stephens (3-5).
