North athletes’ hard work rewarded
To say that last week’s community help event at North Fort Myers High School was a success would be a huge understatement.
The senior fall sports student athletes, along with the members of the Miami Dolphins, served more than 4,000 hot meals and gave away more than $35,000 in supplies to families in need.
Such hard work should be rewarded. The Dolphins were so impressed with the athletes that worked hard to make the event a success, they invited them to Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.
The team sent a bus to pick them up, treated them to a pre-game tailgate lunch and bussed them back after the game ended, which unfortunately didn’t end the Dolphins way, a 24-16 loss.
Zaquandre White, a North Fort Myers High School alum got several of his Dolphin teammates to come and help his community out last Tuesday on the team’s day off. (White was released Monday by the Dolphins from their practice squad).
“The team got in touch with the school district, the district got with Principal Debbie Diggs, and from there they decided to have a food drive with World’s Kitchen and other vendors,” North football coach Dwayne Mack said.
All the seniors on the fall sports teams came together. The administration and athletic director Joe Bowen decided it should be fall sports seniors (football, volleyball, swimming, bowling, cross country, golf and cheerleading), Mack said.
“Diggs came up with a system that worked along with the Dolphins and World’s Kitchen and serve 4,000 meals,” Mack said. “The kids who showed did such a great job they were invited to attend a game.”
Mack said this was one more example of the high-caliber student athletes North has, both on and field and off.
“It says a lot about the students we have here and how they represent the school and community, as well as the leadership at the school who were able to partner with the Dolphins, the NFL and the school district to be able to serve the community,” Mack continued. “It’s a great thing.”
