Football
Bishop Verot 33, Lehigh 16: The Vikings (2-0) picked up the 300th win in the history of Vikings football, pulling away in the fourth quarter. Matthew Tucker had a pair of 15-yard touchdown runs, the first and last of Verot’s scores. Up just 19-16 early in the fourth quarter, Tookie Watts gave the Vikings some breathing room with a 73-yard kickoff return. Carter Smith connected with Trevontay Watts on a 19-yard TD pass, and ran for a 9-yard score.
Island Coast 24, Everglades 21: Gervaris Leaphart ran for three touchdowns, including a 50-yarder, to lead the Gators. Coach Chris Burnett got his first coaching victory as Island Coast held off a late Everglades charge. The visitors’ final TD came with 8.4 seconds to play. Special teams provided the other Island Coast touchdown as Anthony Belton got his hands on a high Everglades punt snap for six points.
Mariner 10, DeSoto County 7: Gabriel Chica kicked a 33-yard field goal with eight seconds to play, lifting the Tritons (1-0) to the win. Mariner’s defense played a huge role, forcing five takeovers. Marcus Kelley Jr. caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Noah Tolbert in the first quarter.
Dunbar 17, North Fort Myers 8: North’s score came when Bryce Duross connected with Bo Summersett from 11 yards out with 2:14 remaining. Duross passed to Daniel Newsome for the conversion. The Red Knights were stopped twice inside the Dunbar 10-yard line.
Sarasota Out-of-Door 51, Oasis 29: Jaxon McArdle Sykes had a big game in defeat for the Sharks. He threw a touchdown pass to Chris Moorhead, ran for a score and caught a TD pass from Parker Smith. Gavin Whittmer also ran for a score.
Ida Baker 48, Bonita Springs 24: Piling up more than 330 yards on the ground, Ida Baker rolled past the Bull Sharks. Jordan Rizzo scored three touchdowns for the Bulldogs, two on runs and one on a Kaiden Stengel pass. Stengel was 5-for-5 passing with two TD tosses.
