Those with the itch to still get out on the diamond can find a home with a local softball league geared towards those 50 and older.

The Half Century Plus Softball League is now accepting registrations for its Fall 2022 season. The 30-game season starts on Sept. 7 and ends Dec. 21, with games played Monday and Wednesday nights at Strausser BMX Sports Complex in Cape Coral.

Players must be at least 50 years of age or older, and all individuals be drafted into teams. Those who submit an application before the deadline of Aug. 31 will secure their spot on a team.

League member and marketing director Frank Wilson said, “I have three points to describe why I play softball: love of the game, the camaraderie and the exercise. All three are a basis for staying on the field.”

There is an $85 per player fee to participate. Half Century Plus is a self-governed league following rules as per ASA/USA Adult Slow-Pitch, High-Arc Rules.

Many members say they have built lasting friendships and bonds though playing the game they love.

“Friendships? Absolutely!,” said League Presidents Wayne Hecht. “League members have formed strong friendships that have continued from season to season and do activities outside of softball events.”

Jay Jerome, vice president of Half Century Plus Softball, said, “The league is all about getting out and having a good time. You can’t help but meet new people and make new friends. Everybody just enjoys playing. At the beginning of every season, everybody goes back into the pool, to be redrafted. The benefits are twofold. One, no team builds an unbeatable team. Two, every season you get new teammates. You get to meet new people and make new friends.”

For more information about the league, contuse Hecht at 954-445-5707, Jerome at 219-776-1333, Jennifer Ford at 239-292-2923, Dave Todd at 410-279-1428, Gayle Gallagher at 303-229-5285, Matt Page at 239-291-8642 or Frank Wilson at 513-600-1115.

Those interested can also write to the Half Century Plus Softball League at P.O. Box 21, St. James City, FL 33956.

Strausser BMX Sports Complex is at 1410 Southwest 6th Place.

“It’s about the love of the game, and the love of playing the game,” Jerome added. “Making new friends and building new relationships. We hope to see you on the diamonds.”

Ford said, “It is heartwarming and genuinely a terrific, uplifting feeling to see the smiling, happy faces of members of the league, who may otherwise be at home watching television. Come on out and see what we are all about.”
