Flying Tigers down Mighty Mussels, 3-1

By Staff | Jun 23, 2022

The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels managed just three hits in a 3-1 loss to the Lakeland Flying Tigers Wednesday night at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland.

All the Mussels (40-23) could muster against Lakeland starter Garrett Burhenn and relievers Blake Holub and Williander Moreno over nine innings was a double off the bat of Dillon Tatum and singles by Rubel Cespedes and Carlos Aguiar.

The Mighty Mussels did jump out to an early lead in the game, scoring a run in the second on Aguiar’s single. After the Flying Tigers (32-33) tied the score with a single run in the third, a two-run home run by Esney Chacon in the fourth gave Lakeland the lead for good, thanks to its solid pitching performance.

Burhenn (4-1) earned the win, allowing the three hits over six innings while striking out seven and walking zero. Moreno picked up the save, his third of the year. In all, the Flying Tiger pitchers struck out 13.

Travis Adams (4-3) took the loss for the Mussels, allowing all three runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking just one.

Samuel Perez and Regi Grace each pitched two innings for the Mussels in relief.

The Mussels take on the Flying Tigers today at 6:30 with Pierson Ohl (3-3) taking the hill for Fort Myers. The series continues with games Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Lakeland.
