Mighty Mussels take opener with Flying Tigers, 3-2

By Staff | Jun 22, 2022

The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels built an early 3-0 lead over the Lakeland Flying Tigers Tuesday evening before holding on for a 3-2 win in Lakeland.

The Mussels opened the scoring in the second when a Keoni Cavaco triple scored Rubel Cespedes. The Fort Myers club added a second run in the fourth when a groundout by Cespedes scored Noah Miller.

The Mighty Mussels plated their third run, and the eventual game-winner, in the fifth when a throwing error by Lakeland’s Daneurys De La Cruz allowed Mikey Perez to score.

Lakeland managed to score single runs in the fifth and eighth (on Manuel Sequera’s 10th home run of the season) but it was not enough to overcome the Mussels, who upped their season record to 40-22. The Flying Tigers fell to 31-33 with the loss.

Jordan Carr picked up the pitching win, allowing just one run over five innings with five strikeouts and two walks. He is now 2-0 on the year.

Providing relief pitching support were Jackson Hicks, Anthony Escobar and Hunter McMahon, who earned the save, his 5th of the season.

The Mighty Mussels and Flying Tigers are set for game two of the series today at 6:30 p.m. at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. Travis Adams (4-2, 2.94 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Mussels.
