Vote for Athlete of the Month

Voting for the Cape Coral Breeze Athlete of the Month for April is now open.

We had countless top performances from student-athletes in our coverage area and now it’s up to readers to decide who will earn top honors for the month.

Nominees for April include:

• Jordi Guerrero, Island Coast, Baseball: Guerrero drove in eight Gators over three games last week, including a six-RBI performance against Cape Coral. He batted .600 across each of the three Island Coast victories, hit two homers, scored five runs, and collected five extra-base hits.

• Jake Mueller, Island Coast, Baseball: Mueller blasted two homers and collected eight RBI in three Gator victories last week. The University of Alabama commit had a five-RBI performance against Cape Coral, and scored seven total runs going 7-for-8 over three games.

• Michael Ruse, Cape Coral High School, Baseball: The Seahawk designated hitter/first baseman had a 6-RBI performance versus LaBelle, where he went 2-for-3 with a grand slam, double, three runs scored and a walk.

• Ashton Devitt, Mariner, Weightlifting: Devitt captured the FHSAA 2A Region 4 weightlifting championship for snatch in the 169-pound class for his 180-pound lift, a personal record. The senior is the first weightlifting regional champion is school history.

• Julianna Nieves, Ida Baker, Softball: Nieves was scorching hot last week, going 7-for-10 at the plate for Ida Baker. She collected five RBI, scored six runs, and walked twice. The sophomore also blasted a home run versus North Port.

• Kendall Wylie, North Fort Myers, Softball: Wylie was impressive in both the circle and at the plate for the Red Knights, as she pitched 10 innings in an extra-inning victory over Riverdale and went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in a win over Naples.

*Luke Buzzelli, Ida Baker, Wrestling : Buzzelli took home the bronze in the traditional lift at the FHSAA Class 2A State Weightlifting Championships in the 169-pound weight class with total lifts of 575 pounds. He set personal bests at the meet, and was undefeated in regular season competition.

*Victoria Ash, Bishop Verot, Softball: Ash was dominant in the circle in back-to-back victories for the Vikings Saturday. The Stetson University commit tossed 11 total innings of shutout ball, first in a four-inning performance against Estero where she struck out 10 and drove in two runs. She followed up with a complete game effort against Riverdale where she fanned 11 and allowed just one hit.

Athlete of the Month nominees are comprised of the Breeze’s staff-selected Athletes of the Week for that respective month.
