A new season is on the horizon for the Cape Coral 50+ Senior Softball League which has been in existence for more than four decades.

Running from Jan. 4 to April 14, the 30-game season is nearly ready to begin and rosters are starting to get finalized.

The league conducts a live draft with its managers to determine which players go to which team. This takes place on Dec. 17. To be eligible for the winter season, players must be registered by Dec. 14.

“The league is a way to meet other people and get a good deal of exercise,” said league president Anthony Volpe. “We will take all players regardless of their experience — we all have a right to have fun.”

The recreational softball league is open to senior men and women over the age of 50 and welcomes players of all skill levels.

League games take place Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Cape Coral Sports Complex, with practices on Saturday mornings at Strausser BMX Sports Complex starting at 9 a.m. The Saturday morning practice is open to all.

“This gives everyone the chance to get to know your fellow players along with their strengths and weaknesses,” Volpe said.

To join the league and be placed on a team, individuals must fill out an application and pay a player fee of $80. The Cape Coral 50+ Senior Softball League is 43 years old and is a Cape Coral Parks and Recreation program.

“When I started in the league I basically was new to the area, and wanted to play softball,” Volpe said. “I found the league through a brief conversation, and was asked to join. I have to say, this opened up a whole new world of friendships.”

Those with questions or interest in joining the league can contact Volpe at 315-246-5056 or Julio Lock at 239-823-0134.

The Cape Coral Sports Complex is at 1410 Sports Blvd. The Strausser BMX Sports Complex is at 1410 S.W. 6th Place.
