Cypress Lake High School has announced that Joseph Mendes has been promoted to head coach of the varsity football team. Mendes has been on the coaching staff since 2016, most recently as defensive coordinator.

“We are so excited about Coach Mendes taking over the program!” Cypress Principal Angela Roles said. “He has been a huge part of building the football culture that exists now. We are so lucky to have someone on the current staff to step into the role. He brings continuity to the program. He knows what it means to do the work… he loves his players but expects a lot from them in the classroom and on the field.”

In 2018, Mendes’ defensive unit was ranked in the Top 5 in Florida Class 5A Varsity Football. In 2019, Cypress Lake won its first District Championship in 25 years and in 2020 won its first playoff game in school history.

Mendes also served as head coach for the junior varsity team at Cypress Lake High School and finished with 13-1-2 record.

Cypress Lake High School, a South Zone specializing in five arts programs: music, dance, media, theatre and visual arts, is located at 6750 Panther Lane in Fort Myers. For additional information about the school, call 239-481-2233.
