Cape High’s Orozco, Ledino fall in state tennis semifinals

Cape players fall in semis: Matt Orozco of the Seahawks fell to George Kosseifi of American Heritage in the state 2A singles semifinals on Thursday, 6-4, 1-6, 8-10. Cape’s doubles team of Orozco and Trey Lendino fell in the semifinals as well. In both cases, those who defeated the Seahawks also won in the finals.
Cape Coral coach Alan Gurgal said that, “It was a great experience for the kids, and I believe it may either be the farthest or tied with the farthest anyone has gone from our school.”
Singles Semifinal :George Kosseifi (American Heritage) def. Matthew Orozco (Cape Coral) vs. 6-4, 1-6, 10-8
Doubles Semifinal: Gabriel Escobar/Nicolas Galligan (Jensen Beach) def. Orozco/Lendino (Cape Coral) 6-1, 6-3
Bishop Verot 5, Parrish Community 2: The Vikings (21-3) added another district title to the trophy case. Victoria Ash went the distance to be the winning pitcher, and also drove in two runs. Audrey Mills had two hits, including a double, and Sophia Miller had an RBI. Bishop Verot will be at home May 5 to open the state playoffs against Clearwater Calvary Christian (20-5), which fell 4-3 to Tampa Academy of the Holy Names in the District 3A-11 final.
North Fort Myers at Charlotte, 7 p.m.
Mariner 6, Lemon Bay 5: The Tritons (15-12) walked it off for the district title. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Cole Sandifer singled to drive in Anthony Pimentel for the game-winner. It was Pimentel’s second RBI of the game. Drew Gifford had two hits and an RBI, and Zach Mills also drove in a run. Matt Morales earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Mariner will open the state Class 4A playoffs with a home game May 6 against Hardee, which lost to Sebring in the 4A-11 final.
