State 2A boys tournament
Cape players advance: The FHSAA Class 2A State Tennis Championships started Wednesday, with both singles top seed Mathew Orozco of Cape Coral and the Seahawks’ doubles team of Orozco and Ty Lendino winning their opening matches Wednesday.
The semifinals and finals of the individual singles and doubles bracket will take place Thursday. The winners will then play the team champion for the overall state title on Friday

North Fort Myers 11, Ida Baker 1 (5 innings): Desirae Devine went 3-for-3, homered and drove in two runs for the Red Knights (21-5) as North pushed its way into the district final. Madelyn Tejada tripled and had three RBI. Taylor Rosciti added two RBI for the Red Knights. Adriana Przrespolewski drove in the Bulldogs’ (11-9-1) run.
Charlotte 7, Port Charlotte 2: The Tarpons (14-6) blew open a 2-all tie in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn home-field advantage for Friday’s district title game.

Wednesday’s scores
Fort Myers 9, North Fort Myers 6: The Red Knights scrambled within 6-5 in the top of the sixth inning, only to see the Green Wave add three runs in the bottom of the inning. North kept battling, got a run back, and had the bases loaded when the game ended. Gavin Hause went 3-for-4 with a triple and scored twice for the Red Knights. Fort Myers will play Island Coast on Friday as the home team.
Island Coast 4, Charlotte 1: Kevin Rodriguez went the distance, allowing one unearned run on two hits with 11 strikeouts and no walks. AJ Finco, Emilo Gonzales and Kevin Martinez drove in runs for the Gators (19-6).

Bishop Verot 6, Bonita Springs 0: Josiah Velazquez pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out 10 for the Vikings (19-7). The Vikings will be home Friday in pursuit of the District 3A-10 championship.
Sarasota Cardinal Mooney 6, Gateway Charter 0: Paddy Hebna hit two home runs for the Cougars (20-7), who will travel to Fort Myers on Friday to face Bishop Verot.
